Lyonsleaf, Forging The Path For Natural Skincare Brands Since 2011
Vicky LyonsWhen Lyonsleaf began making skincare products in 2011, we set out to be one of the most trusted natural skincare brands, creating 100% natural, water-free products designed to be gentle on the skin and kind to the planet. Back then, there was no official definition of what “natural” truly meant. In 2016, the introduction of ISO 16128 brought the natural standard into focus, validating everything we had been doing for years.
Lyonsleaf: A Standout Among Natural Skincare Brands
Since our early days, every Lyonsleaf own-brand product has proudly adhered to the ISO 16128 definition of natural ingredients. This internationally recognised standard ensures that every ingredient is derived from nature and has only been processed in ways that do not fundamentally alter its natural state. For us, this is the clearest way to guarantee that our skincare is genuinely natural, transparent, and safe for your skin.
Our First Technical Exception: The Pore Cleansing Charcoal Face Mask
In our history of creating 100% natural products, the Pore Cleansing Charcoal Face Mask is the first Lyonsleaf product that does not technically qualify as 100% natural under ISO 16128. Why? The mask contains activated charcoal made from organic coconut husks. The process of burning these husks, while simple and safe, is considered a chemical alteration under ISO 16128 rules.
This makes the charcoal mask a unique exception among our range. The ingredient itself is still pure, safe, and effective—it’s just the process that prevents it from being classified as fully natural, it is, however, classed as 'natural origin'. There are many ingredients we not use that are classed as 'natural origin' but in the case of charcoal we think it's a great ingredient. Transparency is central to Lyonsleaf, and we are proud to explain why this one product slightly differs from our 100% natural ethos.
Why We Prefer ISO 16128 Over Organic Certification
You might wonder why we focus on ISO 16128 rather than relying solely on organic certification. The answer is simple: organic standards permit preservatives and emulsifiers that we do not believe should be applied to the skin. Because Lyonsleaf products are water-free, we don’t need these ingredients at all. This approach keeps our formulas simpler, purer, and truer to nature.
By following ISO 16128, Lyonsleaf maintains the highest possible standard for natural ingredients. This is why we are recognized among the leading natural skincare brands, offering products that are honest, clean, and effective.
High Organic Content for Skin and Planet
While ISO 16128 defines what is natural, we still use a high percentage of organic ingredients in our products. Organic sourcing reduces pesticide contamination, protects biodiversity, and supports environmentally responsible farming. By combining ISO-certified natural ingredients with organic sourcing, Lyonsleaf ensures that our products are safe for both your skin and the planet.
A Commitment to Transparency
