Calendula has been used for thousands of years in skincare and traditional medicine and many calendula creams are now available as over-the-counter products. But not all calendula creams are pure. If the calendula cream has water, juice or hydrosol as an ingredient it will inevitably have a preservative to prevent bugs from growing in the water content of the cream and an emulsifier to stabilise the mixture of oil and water. Preservatives cause irritation for some people with sensitive skin and emulsifiers can weaken the skin barrier which also causes irritation.
