Teenage skincare: A natural and simple regime for oily and blemish prone skin
Vicky LyonsIf you're after natural skincare for teenage skin, you'll already know the drill: puberty doesn't just change your body, it changes your skin's entire chemistry. One week you're fine, the next you're dealing with an oily T-zone, blocked pores, dry patches, and a spot that's picked the worst possible moment to arrive. Sometimes all at once.
The instinct is to fight back: stronger cleansers, scrubs, toners, a bathroom shelf groaning under the weight of the latest TikTok must-have. But teenage skin doesn't need a battle plan. It needs a bit of understanding.
It All Comes Back to the Skin Barrier
At Lyonsleaf, there's one principle that shapes everything we make, for teenagers and everyone else: look after your skin barrier.
Your skin barrier is your body's front line, a tightly organised structure of skin cells held together by lipids like ceramides, cholesterol and free fatty acids. It seals moisture in for plumped, healthy-looking skin, and keeps out environmental irritants and unwanted microbes. Alongside it, sits your skin's microbiome, the community of good bacteria that keeps the bad bacteria in check and helps your skin regulate itself.
Antibacterial products throw that balance off, wiping out good and bad bacteria alike, which is why they're best reserved for when there's a genuine need. Less obviously, the preservatives in most conventional moisturisers and cleansers disrupt the microbiome too. It's one of the reasons Lyonsleaf products are water-free: no water means no need for a conventional preservative system, so we can formulate with your skin barrier and microbiome in mind from the outset.
When "Squeaky Clean" Backfires
Some of the products aimed squarely at teenage skin push the opposite philosophy: strip everything, scrub harder, cleanse more often. But you can't remove every trace of oil and bacteria without also stripping the lipids that hold your skin barrier together, and those lipids are the mortar in that wall.
A compromised barrier can show up as sudden dryness or tightness, stinging from products you've always tolerated fine, redness, flaky or rough patches, or skin that just feels more reactive than usual. You might also notice new or unusual breakouts. None of these symptoms prove barrier damage on their own, they can have plenty of causes, and acne and barrier damage can coexist, but if your skin's changed a lot after introducing several new products, or after a lot of scrubs, peels or actives like retinol, it's worth asking whether your barrier has simply been washed away.
Oily and Damaged, At the Same Time
This is where it gets confusing. Skin can be oily and dehydrated simultaneously: a shiny T-zone next to dry, tight cheeks, or skin that's both flaky and shiny. New or unusual breakouts can be part of this picture too, which makes it easy to mistake a damaged barrier for skin that just needs a stronger astringent or antibacterial to "sort it out." Reaching for something even stronger tends to do the opposite, damaging the barrier further and starting a cycle that can run for years, sometimes well into adulthood. If that sounds familiar, we've written more about it in How to Fix a Damaged Skin Barrier.
Why Teenage Skin Changes Course
Puberty ramps up sebum production, which can mean shinier skin, clogged pores and more frequent breakouts. It's an understandable reaction to want to strip all that oil and bacteria away, and the marketing budgets of the big skincare brands are more than happy to encourage it.
Skip the Ten-Step Routine
Social media doesn't help. Elaborate, adult-oriented routines are everywhere, and plenty of young people are being encouraged to reach for retinol, exfoliating acids, and multiple active ingredients layered on top of each other, often at an age when their skin barrier is still finding its feet. Too many actives, especially too young, tends to do exactly what you'd expect: damage the barrier further.
Teenage skin doesn't need an anti-ageing routine. It needs simplicity, consistency, and a bit of patience.
Everything You Need, Nothing You Don't
If you're shopping for a teenage skin care set, it's easy to get overwhelmed by choice. That's why we built the 100% Natural Teenage Skin Care Bundle, unisex, suitable for oily, combination and breakout-prone skin, and deliberately not a ten-step regime.

It's water-free, made from non-comedogenic oils, waxes, minerals and herbal extracts, with no preservatives, emulsifiers, fragrance, or artificial chemicals of any kind. Because there's no water acting as a filler, you'll only need a tiny amount each time, good for your skin, your bathroom shelf, and the amount of packaging and shipping involved in getting it to you.
What's in the bundle:
- Unfragranced Beauty Balm, an oil cleanser and moisturiser in one
- Pore Cleansing Charcoal Face Mask, an occasional deeper cleanse for congested skin
- Zinc & Calendula Cream, a soothing, zinc-rich balm for areas that need extra care
- Organic unbleached muslin cloth, for gently removing cleanser and mask
The Routine
We've put together a full step-by-step guide, covering morning and evening, how to use each product, and how to handle the occasional breakout, in our Natural Skincare Routine for Oily & Blemish-Prone Skin. It's written for oily and blemish-prone skin of any age, so it covers everything in your bundle, plus a couple of extras (like our night-time facial oil) if you ever want to build on it.
The short version: cleanse gently rather than scrub, use Zinc & Calendula only where you actually need it, moisturise even though your skin is oily, and don't overdo the mask.
Keep It Simple
The skincare industry wants you to believe good skin is a full-time job. It isn't. Your skin needs consistency, gentleness, and time to do what it already knows how to do.
Keep it simple. Be gentle. And let your skin get on with the rest.
