When chickenpox arrives, our multi-award-winning Zinc and Calendula Cream is the one parents reach for. It combines 18% non-nano zinc oxide, the main ingredient in calamine lotion, with calendula from local growers, both used for generations to soothe and calm itchy, angry-looking skin. Like calamine, zinc oxide is gently drying, which many parents find helpful on blistering spots. It's suitable from 4 weeks old.

Why choose a water-free chicken pox cream?

• Nothing to irritate already itchy skin. Because it contains no water, it needs no preservatives or emulsifiers, and it's completely unfragranced.
• It stays where you put it. Calamine lotion dries to a chalky film that flakes off. This balm stays on the spots, including overnight when itching is often worst.
• Spots in the hair? Applied carefully to the scalp, it barely makes hair greasy, so you can leave it on rather than washing it out.

How to use it on chickenpox

• Dab a little onto the spots with clean fingers or a spatula, as often as needed. Being undiluted, a little goes a long way.
• Use it on unbroken spots. If blisters have been scratched open, especially on children under 3, read Using Unpreserved Skincare on Broken Skin first.
• Pat rather than scratch, keep nails short, and try cotton mittens at night.

When to see a doctor

Contact your GP straight away if your baby is under 4 weeks old, if you're pregnant or have a weakened immune system, or if the skin around the blisters becomes red, hot and painful. Get urgent help for any difficulty breathing or signs of dehydration. The NHS chickenpox page has full advice.
