Sun-stable and nourishing

Nourishing your skin with a diverse range of fatty acids is essential for maintaining a healthy, resilient skin barrier. Among these, the fatty acids that help form ceramides are especially important. Ceramides make up around 50% of the skin’s lipid matrix—the “mortar” that holds the “bricks” (your skin cells) together in the epidermis. Without strong mortar, the wall weakens, leading to dryness, irritation, and a compromised barrier that lets moisture out and environmental aggressors in.

It’s also important to understand that not all oils are created equal when it comes to sun exposure. Saturated fats—often found in tropical oils—are sun-stable, meaning they resist oxidising in UV light. On the other hand, polyunsaturated fats can oxidise when exposed to sunlight, leading to the formation of free radicals. These free radicals not only accelerate the skin’s ageing process but can also contribute to cellular damage and increase the risk of cancer.

At Lyonsleaf, we favour organic tropical oils like coconut and babassu, which have naturally evolved to thrive under intense UV rays. These oils are rich in antioxidants that help neutralise oxidative stress. We recommend products containing these tropical oils for daytime use, particularly when your skin will be exposed to sunlight. However, it’s important to note that while these ingredients help support skin health under the sun, they are not sunscreens and should never be used as a substitute for dedicated sun protection.
