Teenage Skin Care: A Simple Routine for Oily & Blemish-Prone Skin
Vicky LyonsTeenage skin can be a bit of a mystery.
One minute your skin is perfectly happy and the next you're dealing with oily patches, blocked pores, spots, dry patches — or somehow all of them at once.
It's tempting for teens to fight back with stronger cleansers, scrubs, toners and a bathroom shelf full of products, especially when they're the latest skincare fad on TikTok. But teenage skin doesn't necessarily need complicated skincare.
The Importance of the Skin Barrier
At Lyonsleaf, we believe there is an overarching principle that should inform all skincare, for teenagers and everyone else: look after your skin barrier.
The skin barrier is your body's first line of defence. It seals moisture in, vital for plumped youthful looking skin, while helping to protect the skin from environmental irritants and unwanted microbes, vital to prevent breakouts and infections.
Your skin's microbiome is part of your skin's ecosystem, helping it maintain its health and protective functions and, importantly, a healthy skin microbiome naturally keeps the bad bacteria in check.
So, it is obvious antibacterial products (which will kill good and bad bacteria) should only be used when there is a definite need.
Avoiding antimicrobial ingredients, including conventional preservatives found in most moisturisers and cleansers is not such an obvious issue. These ingredients stop the water-based product spoiling by killing any microbes that enter the product. They can also kill the microbes on your skin, good and bad.
This is one of the reasons Lyonsleaf products are water-free. Because they contain no water, they don't require a conventional preservative system to prevent microbial growth in the product.
Traditional Teenage Skin Care for Oily & Blemish-Prone Skin
Sadly, some of the products and routines marketed specifically at teenage skin can encourage the opposite approach: Removing oil and bacteria is the name of the game.
This culture encourages teenagers to scrub harder and cleanse more often.
But squeaky-clean isn't healthy skin. You cant remove every trace of sebum without stripping the lipids in the outer layers of the skin. And, they are the mortar in the wall that is your skin barrier.
What Does a Damaged Skin Barrier Feel Like?
A compromised skin barrier can present in lots of different ways.
Your skin might suddenly become persistently dry or tight, products that you've previously tolerated may start to sting, or you may develop redness, flaky or rough patches and increased sensitivity.
You may also find that your skin seems generally more irritated or that you're experiencing unusual breakouts.
These symptoms can have many causes, so they're not necessarily proof of a damaged skin barrier and acne and barrier damage can certainly coexist.
But if your skin has suddenly become much more sensitive after introducing a number of new products, or if you've been doing lots of scrubs, face masks, peels or actives like retinol, it important to consider whether your skin barrier has simply been washed away.
Oily Skin and Skin Barrier Damage
This is where things can become particularly confusing.
Skin can be oily and dehydrated at the same time. You might notice an oily T-zone while other areas feel tight or dry, or find that your skin is both shiny and flaky and of course you may experience unusual breakouts.
Oily Skin Barrier Damage Cycle
That combination of symptoms can make you feel as though you need to reach for an even stronger cleanser or a spot or acne treatment, which can cause more barrier damage.
This can lead to a cycle that can go on for years even into adult hood.
Why Does Teenage Skin Change
Puberty brings lots of changes to the body, and hormones can affect the skin dramatically. Increased sebum production can mean shinier skin, clogged pores and more frequent breakouts and even acne.
It's understandable, then, that teenagers with oily or blemish-prone skin might want to remove as much oil and bacteria as possible. And the marketing departments of the big brands are happy to encourage them.
Age-Appropriate Skincare
There's another reason we're talking about simple teenage skin care at the moment.
Social media is full of elaborate skincare routines, and some young people are being encouraged to use products designed for adult skin, including retinol, exfoliating acids and multiple active ingredients layered together.
Using too many actives, particularly at a young age, can (you guessed it) damage skin barrier.
Teenage skin definitely doesn't need an adult anti-ageing routine. Keeping skincare simple and age-appropriate is a much better approach.
How to Care for a Damaged Skin Barrier
If you think you've damaged your skin barrier, the best approach is to simplify your routine and nourish with plant oils that feed the skin barrier.
Stop using products that sting or make your skin feel uncomfortable. Avoid harsh cleansers, scrubs and potentially irritating actives such as retinoids, anti bacterial products and exfoliating acids. Keep your routine gentle and simple while your skin settles. Using water-free products also means you can avoid antimicrobial preservatives and emulsifiers too.
Lyonsleaf Unfragranced Beauty Balm is 100% natural, free from preservatives and emulsifiers and can be used to moisturise, cleanse and as a primer under make up. This is a simple day to day skincare product thats got almost all of your facial skincare needs covered.
If skin is irritated we would recommend adding our Calendula and Marshmallow Balm a gentle anti-inflammatory to soothe and repair the barrier. It can be used over night. Apply after oil cleansing, or more often if required, to soothe angry skin. This product has a potent dose of both Calendula and Marshmallow root to calm and repair.
We also have a range of mineral make-up which free from antimicrobial preservatives and harsh ingredients. If you have to wear make up, good quality mineral make-up is the best option.
Lyonsleaf Zinc and Calendula Cream is a powerful anti-inflammatory and is great to calm breakouts and irritation, but zinc oxide is drying because it acts like blotting paper, absorbing oil from the surface of the skin. It will absorb oil from the skin barrier if there is no oil at the surface. While this can be useful for oily patches, care should be taken if you suspect the barrier is damaged.
If it is required to calm redness or irritation where the skin barrier is still healing, use the sandwich technique:
- Oil Cleanse and leave skin damp.
- Apply a sparse layer of Beauty Balm over the skin to seal in moisture.
- Then apply the Zinc and Calendula Cream over the Beauty Balm.
The Zinc and Calendula will calm the inflammation and the Beauty Balm will act as a buffer preventing oil from being absorbed from the skin barrier.
Lyonsleaf Zinc and Calendula Cream can also be used as a spot or pimple treatment. If a pimple has come to a head or there are weepy patches, the zinc will absorb the fluid, drying the pimple or rash and encouraging healing. If you're using it in this way you don't need to moisturise first - you want the zinc's drying action, but be cautious. If it feels like the barrier has weakened start moisturising with Beauty Balm or Calendula and Marshmallow Balm again
How Long to Heal a Damaged Skin Barrier
How quickly the skin barrier recovers depends on what caused the irritation and how significant the damage is, so there isn't a single recovery time that applies to everyone. It does however take time, 2-4 weeks at least.
The important thing is to stop repeatedly irritating the skin while it has a chance to recover, and even after it heals, if you use a scrub, active or any product that makes the skin feel tight, dry or irritated, cease use, at least for a while, give your skin time to recover and consider whether that product is really right for you long term.
Finding the Right Teenage Skin Care Set
We think prevention is better than cure.
If you're looking for a teenage skin care set, it can be difficult to know what you actually need.
That's why we've created our 100% Natural Teenage Natural Skin Care Bundle

It's not a ten-step teenage beauty regime.
The bundle is unisex and suitable for oily, combination and breakout-prone skin. It's water-free made with non-comedegenic, natural oils, waxes, minerals and herbal extracts, with no preservatives, emulsifiers, fragrance, no artificial chemicals whatsoever.
Even though this is an oil based system, none of the products will clog pores because we are careful to use non-comedegenic oils. What you will notice is that you only need a tiny amount compared to products that use water as a filler. Our tiny pots save packaging and shipping resources as well as space on your bathroom shelf.
You don't need water in a moisturiser. The best way to moisturise skin is to apply natural oils over damp skin, sealing the moisture in and avoiding all the necessary preservatives and stabilisers necessary in water based products.

A Simple Teenage Skin Care Routine
The best teenage skin care routine is one that you can actually stick to, something simple. And one that doesn't leave your skin feeling stripped, tight or irritated.
Do this once or twice a day. If you only do it once, do it in the evening. Just wash the face with water in the morning, apply Beauty Balm and your prefe
1. Start with a Gentle Cleanser for Teenage Skin
Cleansing is the foundation of a good skincare routine, particularly if your skin tends to be oily or prone to blocked pores.
At Lyonsleaf, we take a different approach to most with our Unfragranced Beauty Balm. Rather than using a traditional foaming cleanser, it can be used as an oil cleanser.
Massage a small amount gently over dry skin, then remove it with a soft, damp muslin cloth taking dirty sebum, make-up and all the day's detritus with it.
It might sound strange to use oil on oily skin, but oil cleansing isn't about adding another layer of grease. Oils can help dissolve other oils, making it possible to remove dirt, make-up and excess sebum without relying on a harsh cleanser that will strip everything good away too.
And because Lyonsleaf products are water-free, our Beauty Balm doesn't require a conventional water-based preservative system. It's made from plant oils, shea butter, beeswax and herbal extracts. A vegan version is available without the organic beeswax.
Keep it gentle: you don't need to scrub your face squeaky clean.
2. Give Your Pores a Little Extra Attention — But Don't Overdo It
Once or twice a week at most, you can add a face mask to your teenage skin care routine.
Our Pore Cleansing Charcoal Face Mask contains charcoal, clays, amla, willow bark and other plant powders. It's designed as an occasional deeper cleanse for skin that feels congested or has blocked pores.
Mix the powder according to the instructions, apply it to your face and remove gently with your muslin cloth.
You should not use a mask every day, or every time you have a spot. Think of it as an occasional addition to your routine rather than something your skin needs constantly.
And if your skin is currently irritated or your barrier is compromised, leave the mask out until your skin has settled.
3. Soothe Areas That Need a Little Extra Care
If you have individual areas that are feeling irritated or particularly prone to blemishes, or excessively oily, our Zinc & Calendula Cream can be applied sparingly to those areas after cleansing. It can also be used as a spot treatment
It contains 18% non-nano zinc oxide alongside calendula, marshmallow root and plant oils. Both Zinc Oxide and calendula are natural anti-inflammatories and will calm all sorts of angry skin including breakouts.
Zinc Oxide is recommended for oily and blemish prone skin because it is lipophilic (oil-attracting). Sebum clings to the outer surface of the zinc oxide particles. It is trapped in the powder matrix and a temporary mattifying effect is achieved.
ZInc and Calendula Cream can be used under mineral foundation if you have oily or acne prone skin, but we would advise only using it on oily areas like the t-zone or areas suffering breakouts, Use the Beauty Balm elsewhere. And, if you use a 100% natural make-up you have a calming cosmetic system with no artificial chemicals and nothing to disrupt the microbiome or skin barrier.
That lipophilic action also dries out pimples that have come to a head. Apply Zinc and Calendula Cream to active pimples overnight to help calm them.
Zinc oxide acts as a gentle astringent. It causes pores to contract very slightly and can restrict the amount of sebum released onto the surface of the skin
Calendula is one of our favourite skincare herbs. We've grown it ourselves or worked with local growers for years, getting the flowers from the field into oil while they're still fresh and vibrant. Calendula has been used for centuries or possibly millennia to calm irritated skin and promote healing.
4. Moisturise — Even If Your Skin Is Oily
This is one of the biggest misconceptions about teenage skin care.
If your skin is oily, you might think moisturiser is the last thing you need. But the oil that seeps from your pores (sebum) is not the same as the oil that cements your skin barrier. You still need to moisturise and many plant oils are made from the very same fatty acids your skin uses to create that 'cement'.
Our Unfragranced Beauty Balm can also be used as a moisturiser. It contains those fatty acids found in the skin barrier, some of which your skin cannot make itself.
You only need a tiny amount, warm a little between your fingertips and gently press it into your skin. The perfect time to do this is after oil cleansing, while skin is still damp. You will have removed excess sebum and you will seal in the moisture.
5. Sunscreen (Not included in our bundle)
If Lyonsleaf made a sunscreen it would utilise zinc oxide to create a physical, mineral sunscreen. it would be water free and preservative free.
If you do wear a mineral sunscreen, we recommend using Lyonsleaf Beauty Balm which has been applied to damp skin underneath. It helps lubricate the skin and makes it easier to apply and will mitigate any drying effect the zinc oxide has on the skin.
Teenage Skin Care Doesn't Need to Be Complicated
The skincare industry can make looking after your skin seem like a full-time job.
But your skin doesn't need a shelf full of products. It needs consistency, gentleness and a little patience.
Keep it simple. Be gentle. And give your skin a chance to do the rest.
